Kathryn Venturatos Lorio named the 2019 St. Ives Award Recipient

Renowned scholar and Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Professor Kathy Lorio, J.D. ‘73, will receive the 2019 St. Ives Award, the highest honor awarded by the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Alumni Association.

“The St. Ives Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law Alumni Association, who chose this year to honor Professor Lorio for her longstanding leadership at the university,”  Dean and Judge Adrian G. Duplantier Distinguished Professor of Law Dean Madeleine Landrieu, J.D. ‘87, H ‘05. “Through her service to Loyola, the legal profession, and most of all our students, Professor Lorio has exemplified a commitment to excellence, justice, and service to others.’”

Kathryn Venturatos Lorio, J.D. ‘73 has been a member of the law faculty at Loyola since 1976. Lorio was appointed the Leon Sarpy Professor of Law in 1992, the first professorship at the College of Law. She has written four books and a multitude of articles and scholarly papers. Lorio has served on various legal committees and public task forces. She received her juris doctor in 1973 from Loyola and a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1970 from Newcomb College, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Lorio’s teaching and scholarly interests are in family law, civil law of successions and donations, and the legal treatment of alternative reproductive techniques. She is active in law reform on the national level as a member of the American Law Institute, and in Louisiana as a member of the Council of the Louisiana State Law Institute. Prior to joining Loyola, Lorio practiced with the New Orleans firm Deutsch, Kerrigan & Stiles.

Lorio was selected as the 2003 Distinguished Professor of the Year by the Louisiana Bar Foundation and is the recipient of the 2005 Dux Academicus Award, given to a Loyola faculty member who “is able to impart the knowledge and wisdom of the humanities, sciences, or the professions to students in a manner consistent with the unique philosophy of Loyola University New Orleans as a Jesuit institution of higher education.”


A resident of New Orleans, Professor Lorio will be honored at the annual Law Alumni Reception and Luncheon to be held Friday, January 25, 2018 at the Ritz-Carlton New Orleans, 921 Canal St., New Orleans, La. 70112. At the luncheon, alumni will also recognize past law alumni association president Leila D’Aquin, J.D. ’88.
