In Memoriam: Tom Benson 1927-2018

With deep sorrow, fond memories, and heartfelt gratitude, the Loyola University New Orleans community remembers the life of beloved alumnus and New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson, H '87. Our hearts and prayers go out to the entire Benson family and all friends and loved ones. Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Benson was a friend to the university, the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the Catholic community, and the entire city of New Orleans. He truly embodied the Jesuit ideal of being a man "for and with others."

Mr. Benson, who studied at Loyola as a young man before beginning his storied business career, lived a true life of giving and was one of the most generous donors in Loyola's history. He received an honorary doctorate from Loyola in 1987 and was the 2010 recipient of the Integritas Vitae Award, Loyola University New Orleans’ highest honor. Translated literally as “a life of integrity,” the university’s esteemed Integritas Vitae Award is presented annually to a local, national, or world leader who has demonstrated the values and philosophy of a Jesuit education – namely moral character, service to others, and unquestionable integrity.

His life and legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched with his kind and generous spirit.

The entire Loyola community offers prayers to the Benson family and is thankful for the legacy he created for New Orleans.
